Korea gets first software billionaire

Kim Taek-jin, chief executive of NCsoft Corporation, has emerged as Korea's first self-made billionaire, an industry report showed. The value of stocks Kim held reached 1.2 trillion won on May 15 as the company's share price at one point touched 182,000 won, according to Chaebul.com, the online site specializing in monitoring the nation's wealthiest people. Although still not as stock-rich as the heads of Korea's biggest conglomerates, such as Samsung and Hyundai Motor, Kim has caught up with many of their successors. Although Kim's stock value dropped to 969.8 billion won to fall slightly short of $1 billion, as the share price closed at 173,000 won, industry experts believe the value will touch $1 billion again soon. NCsoft's achievement reflects the changing nature of Korea's stock-rich, long dominated by the family-run conglomerates, Chaebul.com said. NCsoft was established in 1997, with the launch of the game, Lineage.
